In 1314, when a great famine struck Europe, parents were often forced to leave their children, or in some cases ate them for want of other food. Scholars believe that the German folktale about Hans and Greta was born out of these horrors and the story was published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers. The story tells the story of an abandoned sibling couple who fell into the hands of a child-eating, evil witch. She lived in a house built of gingerbread, pastries and sweets and this perfume mimics the scents of her house.
