Mathilda Malling (1864–1942, née Kruse) grew up in the Scanian countryside but made early trips to Europe where she also became acquainted with modern literature. Inspired by authors such as Baudelaire, Flaubert and the Goncourt brothers, she began to write herself, under the pseudonym Stella Kleve. Her debut Berta Funcke was met with almost unanimous praise by Swedish critics. This decadent novel, which is as seductively sensual as it is melancholic and nauseating, about a bored and voluptuous young woman was perceived as a product of a sick imagination.

The present edition also contains an afterword by Tobias Dahlkvist about Berta Funcke in a pessimistic tradition of ideas.
