ALASTOR PRESS

Bruges-la-Morte is a beautiful paperback, generously provided with the original photographs (all of which are followed by a blank page) and printed book cuts. It is the story of Hugues Viane, a widower who has come to the melancholic and decayed city of Bruges to mourn his dead wife. The funeral-like atmosphere echoes as much in the city's abandoned gray streets as in Hugues's heart. The only thing that makes the grief bearable is walking around, around the labyrinthine medieval quarters. But then Hugues catches sight of an actress who is the physical double of his dead wife. This leads to a series of events bordered by psychological anguish and emotional humiliation that inevitably lead Hugues towards the drama's fatal resolution and act of madness.

Bruges-la-Morte by the Belgian author Georges Rodenbach was first published in 1892 and is one of the foremost works of decadent literature and symbolism. This is a poet's novel – if you can call it a novel – metaphorically dense and visionary in its style.
