ALASTOR PRESS

European Romanticism gave birth to visions of a new world and a new man. Inspired by the ideas of the French Revolution, early 19th-century writers attacked the old estates. In Italy, two poets were particularly characteristic of this revolutionary period. Ugo Foscolo dreamed of giving the Olympian gods a new home in his divided homeland, while Giacomo Leopardi wrote a series of elegies as beautiful as night-black about the discontent of culture. Both shared the experience of an era that had gone out of joint, and both can be read as early spokesmen for the modern experience of the death of God.

Here, Foscolo and Leopardi are presented for the first time in a collected volume in Swedish, translated by Ingvar Björkeson and with a foreword by Anders Cullhed.
