Guy de Maupassant is often called the father and master of the French short story. During his only ten years as an active writer, he wrote around 300 short stories and six novels. Stylistically, he was sparing and precise, thematically always characterized by a pessimistic stance. In his horror stories, the horror often comes from within and the discomfort is born from the uncertainty about what is real. The short stories span everything from classic ghost stories and horror romance in the wake of the Gothic novel to case descriptions of individual lunatics and testimonies from the most horrific nightmare states imaginable.

Nightmares presents a selection of his best horror stories, including the famous Horla in two versions. They are translated by Hillevi Norburg, who also wrote a foreword, notes and comments for the edition.
